   A connective ending used when the preceding statement is an essential condition for the following statement.

   앞에 오는 말이 뒤에 오는 말에 대한 필수적인 조건임을 나타내는 연결 어미.

   ※ ‘이다’, ‘아니다’ 또는 ‘-으시-’ 뒤에 붙여 쓴다.

Examples

• 나물은 역시 봄이라야 제맛이 난다.

  Namul greens really only taste their best if it's spring.

• 사과는 마음에서 우러나는 것이라야 상대방에게 전달된다.

  An apology only gets through to the other person if it truly comes from the heart.

• 이 보험 상품은 가입자의 손해가 고의가 아니라야 보상이 가능하다.

  This insurance product only pays out if the policyholder's loss wasn't intentional.

• 의사는 타고난 영재라야 될 수 있는 거예요? 아니야. 열심히 노력하면 될 수 있단다.

  Can you only become a doctor if you're a natural genius? No. You can become one if you work hard.

• 너는 왜 장비들을 사서 쓰지 않고 굳이 만들어서 써?

  Why do you insist on making your own equipment instead of just buying it?

• 수리 장비들은 내 손으로 만든 것이라야 손에도 익고 쓰기도 편해.
