Meanings

1. 1

   An expression used to indicate that the speaker is making a subjective and uncertain guess about the preceding statement.

   앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 내용을 말하는 사람이 다소 주관적이고 불확실하게 추측함을 나타내는 표현.

   ※ 주로 ‘-지 않나 싶다’, ‘-지 않았나 싶다’, ‘-지 않겠나 싶다’로 쓴다.

2. 2

   An expression used to indicate that the speaker regrets or worries about the act mentioned in the preceding statement.

   앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 행동에 대해 말하는 사람이 후회하거나 걱정함을 나타내는 표현.

   ※ 동사 또는 ‘-으시-’, ‘-었-’, ‘-겠-’ 뒤에 붙여 쓴다.

Examples

• 같은 내용이지만 영화보다는 소설이 더 재미있지 않았나 싶다.

  Even though it's the same story, I think the novel was maybe more enjoyable than the movie.

• 아무래도 내가 선배이니 후배를 도와줘야 하지 않겠나 싶어서 후배에게 전화를 걸었다.

  I figured that since I'm the senior, I probably should help my junior, so I gave him a call.

• 내 생각에는 이번에는 네가 양보해야 되지 않나 싶다.

  I think maybe you should be the one to give in this time.

• 오늘 승규가 지수한테 지나치게 화를 낸 것 같아. 맞아. 그렇게 화를 낼 필요까지는 없지 않았나 싶더라.

  I think Seunggyu got too angry at Jisu today. Yeah. I thought there wasn't really a need to get that angry.

• 경기에서 큰 실수를 한 선수는 내가 왜 그랬나 싶다며 아쉬워했다.

  The player who made a big mistake in the game expressed regret, wondering why he had done that.

• 방학이 끝날 때가 되자 방학 동안 난 뭘 했나 싶어서 괜히 의기소침해졌다.

  As vacation came to an end, I started wondering what I'd even done with it and felt a bit down for no reason.
