Meanings

   An expression used to indicate that one must do something or accept a certain situation because the preceding statement has been already decided.

   앞말이 이미 정해진 사실이므로 어떻게 해야 한다거나 어떤 상황임이 당연하다는 뜻을 나타내는 표현.

   ※ ‘있다’, ‘없다’, ‘계시다’나 ‘있다’, ‘없다’로 끝나는 형용사, 동사 또는 '-으시-' 뒤에 붙여 쓰고, ‘-는 이상은’으로도 쓴다.

Examples

• 일이 이렇게 바쁜 이상 주말에 쉬기는 어려울 것 같습니다.

  Given that work is this busy, it seems hard to rest on the weekend.

• 대회에 이미 참가하기로 한 이상 최선을 다할 것이다.

  Now that I've already decided to enter the competition, I will do my best.

• 이곳은 관계자가 아닌 이상 출입할 수 없습니다.

  Unless you are personnel, you cannot enter this place.

• 약속을 한 이상 꼭 지키도록 노력하자.

  Now that we've made a promise, let's make sure to keep it.

• 회의 날짜가 여러 개 겹친 이상 뭐 하나는 조정을 해야겠다.

  Since several meeting dates overlap, we'll need to adjust at least one of them.

• 이렇게 계속 노는 이상 시험을 잘 볼 수가 없을 텐데.

  If you keep goofing off like this, there's no way you'll do well on the exam.
