-는 줄 알다

thought that ~ (mistakenly)

Attaches to a verb stem (present -는, past -은/ㄴ, future -을) to state a belief the speaker held, which very often turns out to have been wrong.

Examples

  • 저는 오늘이 토요일인 줄 알았어요.

    I thought today was Saturday.

  • 친구가 벌써 도착한 줄 알고 마중을 안 나갔다.

    I thought my friend had already arrived, so I didn't go out to meet them.

  • 다들 그 영화가 재미없는 줄 알았는데 의외로 좋았어요.

    Everyone thought the movie would be boring, but it was surprisingly good.
