As a connective, links an action to what follows it in sequence or as its means, or gives a reason, and links verbs/adjectives to auxiliaries like 두다, 버리다, 보다, 있다, and 주다. As the informal (반말) sentence-final ending, it can state a fact, ask a question, give a command, or make a suggestion, distinguished by intonation.

Meanings

    A connective ending used when the preceding statement happened before the following statement or was the ways or means to the following statement.

    앞말이 뒤의 말보다 먼저 일어났거나 뒤의 말에 대한 방법이나 수단이 됨을 나타내는 연결 어미.

    A connective ending used when the preceding statement is the cause or reason for the following statement.

    앞에 오는 말이 뒤에 오는 말에 대한 원인이나 이유임을 나타내는 연결 어미.

    A connective ending used to connect a verb and adjective with such auxiliary predicate elements as '두다,' '버리다,' '보다,' '있다,' and '주다.'

    동사와 형용사를 보조 용언인 ‘두다’, ‘버리다’, ‘보다’, ‘있다’, ‘주다’ 등과 이어 줄 때 쓰는 연결 어미.

    (두루낮춤으로) 어떤 사실을 서술하거나 물음, 명령, 권유를 나타내는 종결 어미.

  • 지수는 사과를 깎아 그릇에 담았다.

    Jisu peeled the apple and put it in the bowl.

  • 나는 친구를 만나 영화를 보러 갔다.

    I met my friend and we went to see a movie.

  • 딱따구리가 껍질을 쪼아 열매를 깠다.

    The woodpecker pecked at the bark and cracked open the seed.

  • 우리는 산 정상에 올라가 맑은 공기를 마셨다.

    We climbed to the mountain summit and breathed the clean air.

  • 엄마, 저 숙제하기 싫어요. 군말 말고 얼른 책상 앞에 앉아 숙제해.

    Mom, I don't want to do my homework. No excuses, sit down at your desk and do your homework.

  • 집에 오는 길에 비가 많이 와 옷이 젖었다.

    It rained a lot on the way home, so my clothes got wet.
